Assessment tool: Think alouds
Type: formative (developing)
Grouping: individual, whole class
Purpose: This tool will help teachers assess the process by which students will decode a text by making their thought process visible. It will help teachers see what kind of problems a student may have with a text or concept and what kind of coping strategies they have developing in trying to overcome these problems.
Rationale: This tool is effective in opening up the thinking process of the students. It provides an informal means to which a teacher can see where comprehension breaks down. It also allows teachers to see what strategies are working with particular students.
21CLD connection: Think alouds can be done in class as whole but can be more effective as individuals. Recording their thinking alouds provides a measurable assessment for both teacher and student. Using the Scrible application they can highlight their journey through the text. The video allows them to reflect back on where they may have gone wrong and allows the teacher to assist in introducing coping strategies.
Example:
This is an example of a student using the think-aloud strategy. This student is also using an application called Scrible to annotate her document as she thinks through the piece.
