Assessment tool: Self-assessment
Type: formative (developing)
Grouping: individual, groups
Purpose: This assessment tool is vital in assessment as learning for students. It provides a tool in which students can articulate their own learning and direct its path.
Rationale: Self-assessment is a tool that can come in many shapes and forms. It can be formal or informal, written or oral, immediate or reflective. The goal is to have the student think about their thinking(meta-cognition). As a teacher we must provide formats that will help direct students to effectively assess their learning as most do not have this experience. The teacher's goal is to have the student doing it all the time they create or produce or perform. A teacher can assess from a self-evaluation if a student is in tune with their learning or if there is a gap that must be addressed.
21CLD connection: Having students self-regulate their knowledge construction is key in this modern age. They must be able to assess if they are on track, performing properly or if they are processing all the information. Self-assessment can look very traditional with forms such as the one below but can be seen on online forms or in other assessment tools such as e-portfolio or essay writing.
