Assessment tool: Gamed based assessment - Jeopardy
Type: formative (pre-assessment)
Grouping: Whole class, small groups
Purpose: This tool is to assess prior knowledge using a game based approach. Measuring assessment is can be done by having students write answers down first or by teacher observation.
Rationale: By using a game based assessment it provides the fun factor to the assessment. There is an entertainment value to the tool. It allows immediate feedback with regards to do they know it or they don't. The assessment also allows teacher multiple questions that are categorized. This way a teacher can pinpoint lesson planning based on possible responses of students. This would be a tool for assessment for learning.
21CLD connection: I have used this game based assessment tool on a whiteboard. Interaction with the board provided excitement and suspense as the clock was visibly running down. The exercise was originally designed to allow small groups to collaborate on answers before submitting responses. There are different variations to this approach. Another idea for game based assessment is using Games for Change or Citizen Science website.
These websites are dedicated to the idea games can fuel social change. Completing the game and then reflecting on the outcomes would be a measurable assessment of student’s knowledge.
