Assessment tool: Graphic organizers

Grouping: individual
Purpose: This tool will assess students’ knowledge and how they organize this information
Rationale: By having this tool in my kit and I can visibly see where they are with regards to understanding. This assessment tool will show where and if students are making the connections of the ideas or concepts. It helps demonstrate their contextual understanding. It also allows differentiated instruction by allowing students to demonstrate learning in ways other than just written text. They have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning with symbols, pictures or diagrams.
21CLD connection: Graphic organizers are very popular and come in many forms. There are graphic organizers built into Word 2010 that allows various forms. There are also online options that allow students to structure and display their understanding. Organization and grouping of ideas are an essential skill in the real world. Students are analyzing and evaluating information and constructing their knowledge.

This is a graphic organizer for exponent laws that I created. By leaving out certain information I was able to assess if students were understanding the relationship between terminology and symbolic representations.
