Assessment tool: One-on-one feedback
Type: formative (developing)
Grouping: individual
Purpose: This assessment tool is to provide structured 'just in time" feedback. It allows the teacher to address the goals of the students in reference to outcomes and progress regarding these outcomes. This assessment tool allows two way communication giving the student the opportunity to explain thought processes and reasons behind certain outcomes.
Rationale: This is a more formal formative assessment that assists the teacher and the student in knowing where a student stands in their learning journey. It allows the teacher to ask specific questions regarding purpose and intent as well as asking students to provide evidence of progress on learning. This assessment tool is used with other tools such as observation. This becomes an opportunity for teacher to help student improve on certain aspects of their learning outcomes or to re-focus.
21CLD connection: This type of assessment allows students to reflect on their own learning through a teacher-student feedback. Even though this assessment involves the teacher it is self-regulated by the student as they mark their learning journey. Students are in the process of constructing their knowledge and use the conference as a sign post in their growth. They justify where they think they are and a teacher provides anecdotal evidence supporting that view or countering this. From there the teacher will ask the student what they need to do to get back on track or enhance their efforts, It is an interactive experience where the teacher must react to the student questions or lack of interest. Students must use communicative skills to articulate what they are thinking and why they have made certain choices. These one-on-one feedback experiences are reflective of the real world job experience. Most places have employee feedback sessions. I have been part of these in my tenure with Canada Safeway as an assistant manager.
