Formative - Sign posts along the way
As in any journey it is necessary sometimes to stop and check where one is and if they are the right path. Formative assessment is a used to help students in understand where they are in their journey. It allows them to adjust their path, their learning. It also provides the teacher with information on how best to guide the student on their journey. Assessment for learning can be individualized, small groups or whole class. There are some "quick and dirty" tools to use for immediate, informal feedback while more structure, reflective assessment. A good toolbox will have a mix of assessment tools to use for various points in a unit and for various content material.
