Assessment tool: Wikis
Type: formative, summative
Purpose: This tool is to create a collaborative space that will extend beyond its initial use. Much like the website I am using the learning will extend past the original assignment. It also can be used by others not part of the classroom or school making it a global tool. Assessment can be based on a rubric or a checklist of ideas or qualities agreed to by teacher-students.
Rationale: This is all about the medium. It is a wonderful tool that allows students to really strut their learning. It has very few restrictions and promotes creativity and collaboration. It is an authentic task where most students will use or have seen wikis been used.
21CLD connection: The connection here is the collaboration aspect of the tool. Taking it one notch up would to have students assess one another and then to assess their own. I would have then reflect on the process and how they found constructing the wiki was like. It would be interesting also to see how many continue using the wiki after the assignment due date. The goal is to make something useful and practical using ICT.
Example:
This is a good document from the University of New South Wales in Australia highlighting how to structure wiki for assessing and what are some of the possible pifalls to watch for in using wikis for assssment.
