Assessment tool: Five fingers

Purpose: This tool is to provide the teacher with immediate feedback on a concept being taught. It provides an informal measure of students’ understanding and to what degree.
Rationale: This is low-tech approach to garnishing assessment on whether students are getting it or not. It is “quick and dirty” but effective. It allows the teacher to adjust his lesson by expanding on explanations, approach or moving on with the lesson. This tool is an informal approach but allows a certain measure of how much students are getting by how many fingers they put up. It is a tool based assessment for learning.
21CLD connection: This relates to communication and in some ways to real life problems. This technique is useful in helping communicate how someone is getting what is being taught to them without having any formal evaluation or assessment performed.
